Young Zonta Brugge Youth Conference: An inspiring best practice for the future

On 9 March, the Young Zonta Brugge Golden Z Club hosted its second Youth Conference in Belgium—an energizing and impactful event that drew more than 70 motivated young women and men seeking inspiration and empowerment. Organized by Famke De Soete and Inge Van Schelstraete, and supported by District 27 Area 05 Director Hilde Verstraete, the event successfully spotlighted Zonta’s mission while attracting a new generation of leaders.

Held in a format similar to a career fair, the conference created a space for open dialogue, mentorship and future-focused conversations. “Today’s youth are looking for role models and platforms to express their vision for the future,” said Area Director Hilde in her opening address. “This event provided both.”

International President Salla Tuominen and District 27 Governor Ria Matthijssens delivered powerful welcome messages, reinforcing Zonta’s mission in engaging and accessible language. Their presence added an international touch to an already ambitious event.

The day featured a series of compelling speakers from diverse fields:

  • Karen De Sousa Pesse, a global executive and advocate, shared the importance of resilience and adaptability: “Never give up—resilience is key. There are infinite doors. If you keep knocking, one will open.”
  • Anouk Meier, a Zontian from Ypres, emphasized self-belief and goal setting: “Believe in yourself. If you don’t, who will?”
  • Farida Lamkanfi, from Zonta Club Brussels Zavel, addressed the barriers non-Belgians face and encouraged persistence: “Step by step, we connect the dots.”
  • Professor Marion Debruyne, CEO of Vlerick Business School, urged attendees to challenge internal biases: “Failure does not mean it was meant to be. Keep learning, keep growing.”
  • Axelle Defossez, an advocate for climate justice, closed the conference with a passionate speech on environmental action and youth responsibility.

The event blended professionalism with heartfelt hospitality. Attendees were treated to homemade soup, sandwiches, and treats lovingly prepared by Zontians. A thoughtful goodie bag concluded the day, adding a personal touch to an already empowering experience.

The Youth Conference was met with enthusiastic applause and glowing feedback, affirming its success as a best practice model for other Zonta clubs. It served as a living example of how investing in youth engagement can build a stronger future for Zonta and its mission.

For clubs interested in replicating the event, a roadmap is available through Young Zonta Brugge. “This is the time to inspire, connect, and make it happen,” said organizers. “Let’s build the future together—one empowered young leader at a time.”
